Furniture collections for social housing / Infonavit

The “INFONAVIT Practical Experimentation and Research in Housing Lab” involved designing and developing prototype houses designed to deepen analysis of social housing and achieve better life quality for residents. The project engaged 32 world-renowned architects, each of whom designed one of these homes. The Research Lab was built in the city of Apan, in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico.

The lab has been tasked with testing, evaluating, and validating these prototype houses in order to improve quality of life for people living in them and promote best practices with their developers, demonstrating by example that it is indeed possible to build quality housing at similar costs to what we have nowadays.

Esrawe Studio developed two low-cost, agile-production furniture collections, which can be built at craft workshops throughout the entire country. These collections will inhabit the housing prototypes, which will eventually be integrated into future homes that could be replaced throughout all of Mexico.

Collection 1

Collection developed with simple solid wood frames and natural fabrics. Built using basic shapes and robust expressions, which complement each other and spatially define the prototype homes they inhabit. The collection is inspired by Brazilian modernism and the vernacular Mexican furnishings.

Collection 2

Collection based on electro-painted metal tubular structures and plywood surfaces that aim to complement the spatial coloring of the prototype home. Influenced by the simple lines of Nordic design and the Bauhaus school.
